Abraham and Supporters Hold Press Conference to Demand Reform and Accountability

Lynne Abraham stood forcefully with a crowd of supporters this morning on the steps of City Hall to announce her ground-breaking ethics reform plan.

By holding the press conference at City Hall, Abraham saw an opportunity to address some of these systematic issues where they begin. Abraham referenced the “Philadelphia People’s Pledge” which she introduced to help prevent independent expenditure groups from trying to buy the Philadelphia Mayor’s race. “I created the Philadelphia People’s Pledge because dark, outside money and independent expenditures convolute the political process. It will be a priority in my administration to end the destructive influence of outside money. I was disappointed that none of my opponents felt strongly enough to join me in signing the Pledge.”

Abraham released her plan this morning following the press conference. The six-point plan includes: Rid Philadelphia of “Big Money” Politics, Demand Transparency in All Campaign Donations and Spending, Draw a Bright Line Against the Use of Public Service for Private Enrichment, Shine Light on Politicians’ Official Conduct and Outside Connections, and Advocate for Merit Selection of City Judges.

Abraham stated, “Big Money seeks to buy power for vested interests to the detriment of our people and our future. We can no longer tolerate corrosive forces like Councilmanic Privilege and electing judges in a system of cronyism. If we are to be the ‘Next Great American City,’ this needs to change.”

“I’ve talked to thousands of voters across Philadelphia and they all tell me the same thing—they are tired of ‘business as usual’ politics. It’s time to make the tough choices and I have created a plan that offers real solutions to reform city government. I’m the only one with the experience to lead on day one and I’ll be nobody’s Mayor but yours.”

Abraham has once again separated herself from the other mayoral candidates, by releasing an all-encompassing reform plan that offers common sense solutions to complex and long-standing issues. Last week Abraham posted to her website a comprehensive list of statements on key issues and also released a far-reaching education plan that not only provides solutions for funding, but also for improving our schools.
